Ice Hockey Wins the Founders Cup

The Ice Hockey team got hot at the right time of the year and brought home the Founders Cup. The team knocked off Ft. Zumwalt North in the first round of the seven-team bracket. Seeded third, the Cats played Duchesne in the best-of-two semifinal on their side of the bracket on Monday and Tuesday. In the first game, Duchesne scored the lone goal in the first period before the teams traded two goals each in the second period. Down by a goal, Westminster scored early in the third to tie the game 3-3, which ended up being the final. On Tuesday, a win over Duchesne would advance the team to the championship game, a tie would result in a short third-game tiebreaker, and a loss would end the season. While the scenario had drama written all over it, the Cats quickly removed any anxiety with three goals in the first period and four in the second on their way to a convincing 8-0 win. Emily Griege posted the shutout in goal, with the defense only allowing seven shots on goal. Stats from the Westminster student-athletes over the two games include:

Joey Morici: 3 goals, 3 assists
John Schweppe: 1 goal, 2 assists
Drew Gingerich: 1 assist
Monica Knapp: 1 assist
Jacob DeClue: 1 assist
Emily Griege: 23 saves on 26 shots, 1 shutout

The one-game winner takes all championship featured the Wildcats and fourth-seeded Francis Howell Central. Joey Morici spearheaded the Westminster offensive attack with four of the seven total goals. He netted the first goal of the game just 2:09 into the first period before a flurry of goals in just 49 seconds that saw Howell Central score once and Westminster score a total of three times. Logan Swenson scored in that span before Morici netted his second of the game. John Schweppe got on the offensive stat sheet with a first-period goal to put the Cats up 4-1. The Spartans battled back in the second period with two goals in the first five minutes to cut the lead to 4-3. Morici completed the hat trick with a power play goal during the back half of the second period, and a Drew Gingerich goal in the last two minutes of the period reestablished the multi-goal cushion going into the third period. A power-play goal by Morici early in the third put the game on ice and rounded out the scoring for a 7-3 final and Founders Cup Championship. Griege made 21 saves on the night, tending the net for the Wildcats.

Joey Morici: 4 goals
Logan Swenson: 1 goal, 1 assist
Drew Gingerich: 1 goal, 1 assist
John Schweppe: 1 goal, 1 assist

Congratulations to the team on a great ending to their season!
