2015-16 Season

5/10 Very proud of the guys and the way they competed at Sectionals. Three guys missed State by ONLY 2 strokes and1 player by ONLY 1 stroke! Chad Briden shot a strong score of 81 followed by Jordan Merkel, Logan Montgomery and Willie Canfield each shooting 82 under tough conditions. Congrats on a great season- you have much to be proud of!

5/3  Districts- 3rd place   Congrats to the golf team for finishing 3rd out of 12 teams in a tough District.  Logan Montgomery led the way with a strong 78 & placed 8th out of some 60 golfers along with qualifying for Sectionals.  Also qualifying for sectionals was Jordan Merkel who shot an 81 for 16th place, Chad Briden with an 82 & Willie Canfield shooting an 83!  Congrats guys for how well you competed & for a chance to play at Sectionals as a team- great job!

4/28  WCA 227 Vs JBS 247   – With a flair for the dramatic the  Varsity golf team saved the best for last- shooting the lowest team score of the year 227! Leading the way Logan Montgomery with an even par 35 including an eagle! Chad Briden & Willie Canfield were right behind both shooting 2 over par 37’s!  Helping secure the win was Jordan Merkel who started out +5 but rallied to finish birdie/birdie & shoot a 38! Connor Vargo & Cooper Moore both shot 40’s #awesome day!
The JV boys lost to MICDS yesterday 209 – 229. Nick Callier paced the Cats shooting a 43 followed closely by Zach Nall with a 44. Sam Song, George Meyer, and Michael Shaw also contributed counting scores for the Cats. Congratulations to all the boys on a fine season!

4/26  Great to have Connor Vargo back after an injury to lead the Var team with a 43- following close behind was Willie Canfield with a 44 & Sam Song contributing to the varsity team with a 45. Final score:MICDS 236 to 273.
The boys JV golf team notched another win yesterday against Burroughs 212 -214. Leading the way was Michael Shaw who shot 48 for the guys. Other counting scores were contributed by Andrew Looby, Alex Kempen, and Nick Callier. Nice job guys!

4/21   Torrential rain could not slow down the duo of Jordan Merkel & Logan Montgomery who both came through with 43’s in challenging conditions.  Chad Briden contributed with a 44.  Despite the strong play by the Cats the golf team came up a little short again Lutheran St. Charles 216 to 223.

4/20  In a hard fought match WCA & Lutheran South tied 265-265 but the win went to WCA going to a “scorecard playoff” with the 7th man on WCA securing the win!  Chad Briden led the Cats with a 42 followed by Jordan Merkel & Frosh Tom Isaacs both with 43’s to help eek out the win.

4/19 The VAR golf team fought hard but came up a little short losing to a good Priory team by only 9 strokes 251-240.  Logan Montgomery continued his strong season with a 40 to lead WCA.  Right behind Jordan Merkel, Willie Canfield & Zach Nall all turned in good performances each shooting 41’s.
The jv golfers lost to a very good Chaminade team yesterday at Greenbriar Hills CC 202-166.  Leading the charge for WCA was Michael Shaw who shot a very respectable eight-over-par 43. Nick Callier, George Meyer, and Alex Kempen also contributed counting scores for the Cats.

4/14  The Cats moved their record to 4-1 with another great team effort  over Parkway South 253-272.  Logan Montgomery came through again to lead the Cats & have the low for the match for the second day in a row with a 3 over par 39!  Jordan Merkel shot a 41 followed by Chad Briden with a 42. Connor Vargo & Zach Null helped seal the win with 43’s respectively- great win gentlemen!

The jv boys played a tight match with Chaminade losing 187 – 198. Davis Haeusser paced the Cats shooting a 46 followed closely by Sam Song with a 49. Nick Callier and George Meyer also had counting scores for the boys.

4/13  A strong team effort helped WCA Varsity defeat Burroughs on the golf course 258-273.  Soph Logan Montgomery led WCA & was low for the whole match by shooting a strong 41.  Followed close behind by Jordan Merkel & Connor Vargo with 42’s.  Willie Canfield helped seal the win with a 43.
The jv golfers fell to Principia yesterday 194-207. Zach Nall paced the Cats with a 48. Other counting scores were contributed by Steven Williams, George Meyer, and Nick Callier.

4/11 The boys’ golf team had a strong showing against Priory led by Jordan Merkel who tied for match medalist and dominated Bellerive CC with a one over par 37! Chad Briden came in second with a 42 along with Connor Vargo and Logan Montgomery with 45’s. Freshmen Tom Isaacs contributed with a 46- despite the strong play from the guys Priory snuck past us to get the win. Priory 252 VS WCA 263

4/8  The jv boys golfers persevered through a downpour, high winds, and cold temps as they defeated Burroughs yesterday 178 – 194. Leading the way for the second time this week was Sam Song who shot a six-over-par 41. Also “chipping” in for the Cats with counting scores were George Meyer, Michael Shaw, and Andrew Looby. Nice job guys!

4/6  The boys golf team upped their record to 2-0 with a win over Lutheran South.  Continuing his strong play by leading the Cats & the medalist for the match Jordan Merkel shot a dominating 3 over par 37!  Sophomore Logan Montgomery helped seal the win with a 39- solid start to he season guys!  252-284.
The boys jv golf team began their season in fine fashion defeating Whitfield 171-193. Sam Song led the way with a solid five-over par 39 followed closely by Davis Haeusser with a 40. Steve Williams and Michael Shaw both shot 46’s to round out the scoring for the Cats. Great start boys!

4/5  The golf team came in 3rd place at Conference led by Junior Jordan Merkel who shot an 80 to tie for 2nd place individually!  Sophomore Chad Briden also contributed by coming in 14th place individually.

4/1 The golf team started the season on a strong note beating Whitfield.  Sophomore Chad Briden continued playing well by shooting a 42 along with Senior Connor Vargo who also shot a 42 to secure the win of 180-184.

3/28 Congrats to the boys golf team that competed at the SLUH Invitational yesterday. The team placed 10th out of 20 teams.  Individually, Sophomores Chad Briden placed in the top 20 & Logan Montgomery in the top 30 out of 100 golfers!

 5/12  Even though the golf team came up a little short today in qualifying individuals for State they have much to be proud of for how they represented themselves & WCA throughout the season. Jordan Merkel was our low score followed by Drew Port & then the two froshs Chad Briden & Logan Montgomery. Final team score – 365.

5/5    Congratulations to the entire golf team for their strong play at a very tough Aberdeen Golf Course yesterday at Districts.  Westminster qualified four individuals (top 15 from the tournament) which allow them to play as a team next week at Sectionals!  Jordan Merkel led the team and placed 12 for the entire District shooting a 79 including even par on the back nine!  Drew Port played steady golf as usual to shoot an 83 and both Chad Briden and Logan Montgomery came through to qualify for Sectionals as freshmen!  Way to step up everyone.  Great job!

4/30   Jordan Merkel came through again this week with a 40 to help lead the Cats to victory over Lutheran St. Charles 269-276.  Frosh Chad Briden also contributed to help secure the win with a 43.  Good way to close the regular season for the golf team as Districts are next Tuesday 5/5.

4/29   WCA 266 to JBS 268. Great to see Chad Briden & Drew Port come up big today at Aberdeen to both shoot 42’s & lead WCA to a win.  Jordan Merkel & Connor Vargo were right behind both shooting 44’s to seal the win.

4/24   Jordan Merkel led the way again for WCA with a “master”ful performance at a tough MO Bluffs golf course shooting a 4 over par 40 & placing second in the match overall.  Willie Canfield contributed big with a 42 & frosh regular Logan Montgomery shot a 44.  Final score – Priory 257 to WCA 26

The boys JV golf team upped their record to 4-6 by defeating Whitfield in a tight match 160-164. Sam Song led the way for the Cats shooting an eight over par 37 on the par 29 layout. Zach Nall and Alex Token contributed 40’s and George Meyer and Alex Kempen rounded out the scoring with 43’s. Nice job guys!

4/22  The Dynamic duo of Jordan Merkel & Drew Port shot 38 & 39 to lead WCA. Merkel was 2nd overall in the match missing 1st by 2 strokes.  Freshman Logan Montgomery contributed for the cats with a 43. Overall Cats missed out on the win though, 261-248

4/21  Drew Port & Frosh Logan Monty came up big at Bellerive CC both shooting solid 42’s  Even if we came up a bit short in the 227-222 match vs Whitfield!  Chad Briden added a 45 on the PGA championship caliber course.

The boys JV golf team upped their record to 3-5 on the season defeating Burroughs yesterday 203-231. Sam Song, Alex Token, and Tripp Worley were tri-medalists of the match. Steven Matzig also contributed a counting score. Nice job guys!

 4/17    Golf team lost to Chaminade 275-267- good rounds by Wilson Canfield with a 43 & Logan Montgomery with a 45.  Super impressive comeback round by Jordan Merkel after a 10 on the first hole did not quit but kept fighting to finish 1 over the rest of the day!

The boys jv golf team played well and put up a good fight but came up a little bit short against MICDS 261-282. Steven Matzig shot a career best 44 followed closely by Sam (I almost made an eagle) Song with a 45. Andrew Looby shot a personal best 46 followed closely by Steve Williams with a 47, Alex Token with a 48, and George Meyer with a 52. Good job boys!

4/16  Jordan Merkel & Willie Canfield lead the golf team to the win on 4/15 both shooting 42.  Frosh @chadbriden chipped in with a 43. WCA 170 – Burroughs -190.

The boys jv golfers came out on top 4/15 in a very tight tri-match with Whitfield and John Paul. 208-210-218.  George Meyer led the Cats with a 48. Other golfers who had counting scores for the Cats were Sam Song, Steven Matzig, and Andrew Looby. Great job guys!

4/15    Drew Port & Frosh Logan Montgomery came up big again 4/14 with a 39 & 42 to lead way for a win over Lutheran South.  Junior Willie Canfield shot a 47 to help seal the win 271-279.
The jv boys lost to Chaminade 4/14 at Aberdeen 282-307. Zach Nall had the top score for WCA shooting an 11 over par 47. Other counting scores were contributed by Michael Shaw, Sam Song, Alex Token, Steve Williams, and Tripp Worley.

4/7  Jordan Merkel led Westminster at the Conference Tournament held at Old Warson Country Club by shooting an 82 and making first team honors!  Connor Vargo got second team with an 86 and Cooper Moore from out of nowhere with a 90.

 4/2    The Varsity Cats came up short against Parkway South on Wednesday.  Senior Drew Port shot a solid 43 despite a windy day & a tough golf course.  Both Connor Vargo & Logan Montgomery contributed by shooting a 46 & a 47.

JV boys lost to MICDS 281-307 yesterday. Sam Song led the way for the Cats with a 45 followed closely by Davis Haeusser with a 48. Other counting scores for the Cats were registered by Tripp Worley, Andrew Looby, Steve Williams, and Alex Token.

3/31    Good showing by the golf team yesterday at the SLUH tournament.  Drew Port led the way with a solid 77 to place in the top 20 individually.  Soph Jordan Merkel shot a strong 81 followed by Junior Connor Vargo & Freshman Logan Montgomery both with an 86.  Good start to the season!

5/1  The golf team continued their winning ways upping their record to 11-3 on the season.  JD Klein led all golfers with a strong 1 over par 36 on a tough golf course.  Nick George shot 40 & Sam Bettlach shot 42 for the win. 164-170

The boys JV golfers finished up the season losing to MICDS last 5/1  Thursday 257 to 268. Luke Doiron was low for WCA shooting a solid 41 followed closely by Willie Canfield with a 43. The boys had a very fine season and finished with eight wins and three losses. Way to go boys!

4/30  The golf team recorded another W with a win over Barat. It was Senior day at the golf course with all the Seniors contributing.  Nick George came through with a 41 along with Sam Bettlach 44/JD Klein with a 44 & to help seal the win Blake Geirse 45.  224-228.

The jv boys golf team improved to 8-2 on the season yesterday defeating Whitfield 280-354. Willie Canfield (meet medalist) led Westminster shooting a 44. Other top scorers for WCA were Charlie Zone with a 45 and Connor Vargo with a 46. The Cats conclude the season on Thursday 5/1 against MICDS.

4/24  The Varsity Golf team wins over St. Mary’s  192-208.  – 2 great scores by seniors Nick George & JD Klein both shot 1 over par! Drew Port contributes with a 3 over & frosh Jordan Merkel shot a 42 along with fellow frosh Luke Doiron who shot a 43 to contribute in first Varsity match.

The jv boys golf team turned in another solid performance yesterday as they defeated John Burroughs 267-310. Connor Vargo shot a meet best 41 to lead Westminster to victory. Steve Williams (43) and Cooper Moore (45) both shot season lows. Other counting scores for the Cats were shot by Charlie Zone (45), Willie Canfield (46), and Steven Matzig (47). The Cats are now 7-2 on the season as they take on Lutheran SC on 4/24.

4/23   The jv boys golfers lost to a very good SLU team yesterday 238-265. Leading the way for Westminster were Luke Doiron and Charlie Zone who both shot 41’s on the par 34 layout. Willie Canfiled also contributed a solid 42

4/22   The golf team placed 3rd at the Conference tournament @ Old Warson CC with a team score of 331.  The Cats were led by frosh Jordan Merkel with a 79, which tied him for 8th overall for individual scores.  Drew Port & Austin Benefield also turned in solid scores with an 82 & 83 earning 10th & 11th place individual conference finishes as well.

4/18  The jv boys golf team is now 6-1 on the season after they defeated MICDS 276-284 last Thursday. Luke Doiron continued his good play leading the way shooting a meet medalist 40 on the par 35 layout. Blake Gierse added a 43 and Tripp Worley shot a 44. Other counting scores for Westminster were Steven Matzig with a 49 and Cooper Moore and Zach Nall with 50’s. Great job guys!        The Varsity had a narrow defeat 253-245.

4/17   One day after falling to Priory the Cats came back with the big team win over Priory handing the rebels their first loss of the season.  The individuals who made it happen- Nick George led with 41, Drew Port a 43 & Greg Fleissner came through with 44.  Way to come back after a tough loss yesterday- Great Job!   The jv boys golfers suffered their first defeat of the season losing to a very good Chaminade team 277 – 303. Tripp Worley and Luke Doiron led the way for Westminster shooting a 47 and a 49 respectively.

4/16    The boys’ Varsity golf team fought hard but fell to Priory by only six strokes.  Freshman Jordan Merkel tied for low round for the whole match shooting a 39!  Nick George chipped in with a 42 to keep it close.  The team gets a second shot at Priory today at St. Albans.

The boys’ JV golf team improved to 5-0 on the season defeating Principia yesterday 140-148. Those who had counting scores for the Cats were:  Willy Canfield – 45, Luke Doiron – 47, and Blake Gierse with a 48.  Today they take on Chaminade at Westborough.

4/15    On a very cold, windy/rainy day the golf team came through with the win over Lutheran South & John Burroughs.  Senior Austin Benefield came up big for WCA with a 40 followed by Jordan Merkel with a 42 & Drew Port with a 43.  Way to compete guys!

4/11   Cats win over Whitfield! 255-267.  Nick George dominated St. Albans & everyone else with an even par 36! Drew Port with a solid 39 & Connor Vargo contributed in a big way again this time with a 43.  Great week for the team going 4-0 & making it 5-1 on the season

4/10    The golf team had to grind, struggle, scratch & claw for the W over Lutheran South yesterday – 276-290.  Frosh Jordan Merkel shot the low for WCA with a 43.  Special props to sophomore Connor Vargo who shot a 46 to help seal the win.   Keep going guys one more today, Thur. 4/10 vs Whitfield

4/9      The Golf team continued their strong play with a win over DuBourg.  Nick George fired a 3 over 39 to lead all golfers!  JD Klein & Jordan Merkel each shot 44 to help capture the victory.  263-294

The jv boys golf team continued their winning ways pummeling Whitfield yesterday by a score of 291 – 360. Luke Doiron was the meet medalist shooting a very solid 44 on the tough Whitmoor course. Willie Canfield – 48, Charlie Zone and Tripp Worley – 49’s, Connor Vargo – 50, and Steven Matzig – 51 all contributed to the win with their scores. The boys are now 4-0 on the season.

4/7    On day many teams canceled because of bad weather- golf grinded out a win on a tough golf course against Lutheran St. Charles.  WCA was led by frosh Jordan “phenom” Merkel with a 40 that was the low for the match followed closely by Drew Port with a 41 & Nick “Nicky G” George with a 42 to help seal the win.   #yeahweplayedyesteday 

The boys jv golf team upped their record to 3-0 as they defeated Lutheran SC on 4/7   301 – 329. Blake Gierse was meet medalist shooting a 46 on the soggy Old Hickory layout. Other counting scores for Westminster were: Luke Doiron – 49, Tripp Worley – 50, Zach Nall – 51, Charlie Zone – 52, and Willie Canfield – 53. The boys take on Whitfield Tues 4/8  at Whitmoor CC.

4/2  Playing at a very tough golf course, against the top teams in the area, the boys golf team did themselves & WCA proud as a team & as individuals in the SLUH Invitational.   Senior Nick George led the boys with a 78 followed very closely by JD Klein with a 79 to both place in the top 10 individually.  Junior Drew Port came through with an 80 & freshman phenom Jordan Merkel helped the team place with a solid 82.  Great showing guys!

The jv boys golf team upped their record to 2-0 on the season defeating Burroughs  on 4/1 yesterday    173 to 194. Connor Vargo was the meet medalist shooting a six over par 33. Other counting scores for the Cats were: Willie Canfield and Zach Nall who both shot 34, and Cooper Moore and Steve Williams who both shot 36. The Cats take on Lutheran SC tomorrow 4/3.

3/26  The WCA  Varsity golf team started the season yesterday with a big win beating Chaminade by 2 strokes!   244-246. Senior JD (think positive) Klein stepped up to lead the way with a strong 2 over par 36.  Senior Nick George contributed to the win with a 39 & freshman Jordan Merkal helped seal the win with a 39 of his own. #greatstartguys  

The boys JV golf team defeated Principia yesterday 269 – 276 to start the season. Steven Matzig carded a 41 to lead the way. The other counting scores were: Connor Vargo (44), Luke Doiron (45), Zach Nall (46), Willie Canfield (46), and Blake Gierse (47). Good start guys!
