2016-17 Season

1/25   Senior Night was a huge success off the ice but game result was a 5-2 loss to talented Vianney squad! Sophomore Cole McWard was the offensive star scoring both goals! The team and especially the 8 Seniors would like to thank the students and all the faculty who came out on a special night!

1/23  Hockey Senior Night Game TONIGHT at 6:15pm at Queeny Ice Rink:  The Hockey team is on a roll and will end the regular season tonight vs a top 10 team in Vianney!  We will also honor 8 Seniors (Logan Bauer, Nick Callier, Connor Dolan, Bradley Jones, Harry Medler, Jason Kelly, Zach Nall & Charlie Zone) that have ALL been skating for WCA for 6 straight years since they arrived in 7th grade!  TO HELP PACK THE STANDS, hockey team is offering free tickets to all students and faculty that arrive to Queeny Ice Rink by 6:15pm to honor Seniors!  Besides saving $5, you will also be in raffle for $25 Chick fil-a gift card given out in 2nd period!  We know its busy for everyone with spirit week practices but hope all can come out…especially the “Lady Rock Stars” from Friday’s win!

Hockey team was out in full force Friday night watching WCA hoops team use “full team” effort to outlast Lutheran South Lancers and then headed to Hardee’s Ice Plex and received same effort from all 18 Cats in taking out Lancers of Lafayette 8-4!  Struggling & down 2-1 early in 2nd period, the Cat’s were energized by the late arrival of “25 WCA Lady Rock Stars” led by MaryKate Kopsky, Sofia Granata & Kathryn Kramer that cheered endlessly and helped Cats outscore opponent 7-2 from that point forward!  Sophomore Goalie George Jones stopped 20 of 24 shots for his 2nd victory of the season while the combo of Kelly & Nall netted 2 goals each with other 4 goals scored by Ben Parres, Harry Medler, Logan Bauer & Jack Canfield! “Gritty line” of Blake Swenson, Tyler Culleton & Dylan Wells also received lots of ice time as they continue to improve each game!

1/20  VARSITY HOCKEY 9:00pm TONIGHT: Hockey team is hoping everyone joins them at the basketball games tonight but then heads down to the Valley after hoops to Hardee’s Ice Plex for 9:00pm tilt vs league rival Lafayette!  With only 2 games left before playoffs, the Cats are hoping to build upon huge 9-0 win in last game over Eureka when Sophomore Jack Canfield scored 4 goals in his first game of the season after recovering from knee surgery and Senior Jason Kelly had career game with 2 goals plus 5 assists!  Sophomore Goalie Sam Haupfear got the goose egg with another shutout! REMINDER THAT HOCKEY SENIOR NIGHT IS THIS MONDAY  1/23, AT 6:30PM AT QUEENY vs Vianney and hoping many can come out to support 8 Seniors who have all been playing together for Cats since 7th grade!

1/10  Cats won huge league game on 1/9 over always tough foe Eureka Wildcats!  But our Cats had a secret weapon that hadn’t appeared all season due to severe knee injury!  #15 Sophomore Jack Canfield made his season debut after 9 months of intense rehab.  Jack scored 4 of our first six goals in route to 9-0 beat down!  Senior Jason added 2 goals plus 5 assists in his best game of the season and Zach added 3 assists!  Defense was solid and enjoyed the nice lead while Goalie Sam Haupfear recorded another shutout!

– 12/19: Huge win over #5 ranked Chaminade 4-1 (Goals by Wright, Schroeder, Kelly & Nall with great goaltending by Haupfear)
– 12/23: Tough loss to #6 ranked Marquette 2-0 in fast paced excellent game by both teams! Bounces didn’t go our way as Cats hit crossbar 4 times that deflected out!
– 12/27: 6-0 win over Summit (Goals by McWard, Kelly (2), Tipton, Nall & Parres with shut out by Haupfear).  Freshman Ben Parres also added 2 assists while fellow frosh Aidan Penberthy played solid Defense with over 1/3 of team out of town!
– 12/29: 2-2 tie to always tough Seckman!  Once again with only 11 skaters, Cats had great goal-tending by Sam Haupfear and goals by Dolan & Kelly….Jason’s with :17 seconds left to tie the game with our goalie pulled!

12/16  8:50pm tonight vs rival Summit at the Fenton Forum!  Hockey players would love all the “Blue Crew” fans cheering on hoops teams to head south 10 minutes to Fenton to watch always entertaining close game vs Summit!  Plus more chances to meet up with WCA friends on:

12/9  The hockey team lost a heart breaker to Marquette last night 3-2!  Senior Zach Nall got the Cat’s off to fast start with goals :40 seconds into game then 3 minutes later but the Marquette goalie slammed the door shut after that!  Cats out shot the Stangs 29-16 and with score tied 2-2 and a minute to go in the game…..Junior Levi Wright’s attempted game winning shot hit the crossbar and unfortunately 12 seconds later Marquette scored the game winner!  Despite the sudden turn of events, Cat’s pulled goalie for extra attacker and created many quality chances to no avail! CATS NEXT GAME AFTER FINALS NEXT FRIDAY THE 16TH!

12/8    Tonight 8:15pm at Queeny Ice Rink will be the site of biggest hockey game of the regular season to date vs Conference leading Marquette Mustangs!  The Cats trail Marquette in standings by one game halfway through the regular season but this game will go long way in determining title between these two rivals & favorites!  The Cats would love as much support as possible (faculty free with school i.d.)!

11/29 Cats played well vs #3 ranked DeSmet and trailed 2-1 late but rally fell short with a minute left as we pulled our goalie for extra attacker and Spartans scored empty net goal for 3-1 win of Cats.  Junior Levi Wright scored lone goal. Sam Haupfear was stellar between the pipes while Nick Callier played awesome full ice game frustrating opponent with relentless checking & grit!

11/28 The Cats rebounded well after Monday 5-4 loss to Seckman and won huge game Saturday night over always tough Kirkwood Pioneer’s team 4-2 in front of big holiday WCA crowd in Kirkwood!  #1 Star of the Game was Goalie Sam Haupfear who basically was a Brick Wall stopping 40 of 42 shots!  #2 Star(s) was shared by Cats top forward line of Jason Kelly (goal & 2 assists) / Zach Nall (2 goals) & Cole McWard (1 goal).  #3 Star was Bradley Jones who played great game on Defense but also added 2 assists with one being the Game Winner!
Hockey team would love support in big game tonight Mon 11/28, vs #3 ranked DeSmet at Queeny Ice Rink at 8:15pm!   Cats are currently 5 & 2 one third of the way thru regular season and have thrived with “Blue Crew” support!

11/21  This team is off to a fast regular season start with 4 wins and only one loss and had another big crowd Friday to help the Cats buzz rival Summit 5-2!  Special thanks to WCA Soccer Coach “Senor” Legters who attended his first WCA hockey game ever and inspired two of his Senior Soccer stars….Connor Dolan (4 assists) and Harry Medler (1 goal) that helped compliment the #1 forward line of Zach Nall, Jason Kelly & Levi Wright (combined for 3 goals &  4 assists). Defense was happy to see Senior Bradley Jones back healthy again after awkward “Improv” injury and as always, Sophomore Goalie Sam Haupfear saved 27 of 29 shots to seal the deal for Cats!  TONIGHT, Mon 11/21, THE CATS TRAVEL TO SOUTH COUNTY ICE RINK FOR 7:00pm PUCK DROP VS SECKMAN!

11/16  Thank you Coach Schoenberg for coming out to support the Cats last night and Coach was kept very busy tweeting out scoring updates as team skated past the Parkway West Longhorns 9-2 and out-shot them 43-19!  Leading the offensive onslaught were 3 Seniors Jason Kelly (3 goals, 1 assist), Logan Bauer (2 goals, 1 assist), Harry Medler (3 assists) and Freshman Dylan Wells (1 goal, 2 assists).  Major kudos to Sophomore goalie George Jones for playing really well the last two periods in relief of starter Sam Haupfear! NEXT GAME THIS FRIDAY AT 8:50PM (FENTON ICE RINK) VS RIVAL SUMMIT!

11/14  Another big Friday night hockey crowd was treated to a thrilling Wildcat comeback 3-2 victory over Eureka as our play-making Sophomore defenseman Joe Schroeder sent perfect pass to Senior Zach Nall who buried the equalizer with 3 minutes left then Joe did it again with great assist to hobbled Senior Jason Kelly who netted game winner with just 22 tics left on the clock! Junior Andrew Tipton scored our 1st goal cleaning up rebound after a Nick Callier breakaway rebound laid on the doorstep!  Busy week ahead for Hockey team with Conference Games Tuesday vs Parkway West and Friday vs Summit!

11/10 Another huge Friday Night Varsity Game this coming Friday 11/11 @ 7:10pm at Fenton Ice Rink vs conference rival Eureka!  Our biggest hockey crowd ever dressed in “Camo” helped us beat Eureka in September in Ice Breaker semi’s when Cole McWard scored game winner with a minute to go while Goalie Sam Haupfear stood tall and Zach Nall shared “enforcer” role with Connor “Rollin” Dolan!

11/8 Cats lost to SLUH on Friday 11/4 at Queeny 7-0.  With only 11 skaters, the Cats played hard but couldn’t muster any offense against deeper & very talented SLUH team!  Next game is huge conference battle on Friday 11/11 vs Eureka at Fenton Ice Rink at 7:10p!

11/2 Varsity Hockey played an all around team game & won their Home Opener to the Regular Season last night 6-1 over the MICDS Rams! Offense was led by the top line of Seniors Zach Nall (2 goals & 2 assists), Jason Kelly (goal & 3 assists) and Junior Levi Wright (goal & assist).  Defense led by   sensational Sophomore duo of Joe Schroeder and Cole McWard who also added a goal & 2 assists. Sophomore Goalie Sam Haupfear was winning goalie saving 20 of 21 shots!

10/25   Varsity hockey ended tough Webster “Top Hat” tourney last Thursday night with a 4-3 loss to Oakville in front of another huge “Blue Crew” crowd with many clad in pink! Down 3-1 early in 3rd, the Cats stormed back when Senior Jason Kelly scored his 2nd goal of the game on beautiful “one timer” shot off slick pass from Junior Levi Wright who really energized the Cats! Minutes later, Wright tied the game on sweet breakaway goal and all looked good for Cats to take control! Rally ended late while shorthanded, the Tigers star skater scored with 90 tics left. Sophomore goalie Sam Haupfear once again kept Cats in the game with miraculous saves while two freshman….Dylan Wells & Aidan Penberthy logged valuable minutes and continued to impress with gritty performances!

10/4  The team continued positive momentum by getting big 4-3 victory in first game of Webster “Top Hat” tourney over Kirkwood in front of another huge WCA hockey crowd! Despite missing 6 players and only having 11 skaters, the Cat’s got huge goals from Senior’s Connor Dolan, Zach Nall & Jason Kelly and the winning goal from Freshman Tyler Culleton (his first Varsity goal). Dolan also teamed with 2 Freshman (Aidan Penberthy & Ethan Hare) and Sophomore Blake Swenson on the back line to hold off skilled Pioneer team with huge help from Goalie Sam Haupfear!

9/27   The varsity hockey team beat Marquette 2-1 to win their 2nd successive “Ice Breaker” tourney title!  With another big WCA “white out” crowd, the Cats tied the game mid way thru 2nd period when Junior Andrew Tipton went hard to the net and lit the lamp!  And for the 3rd straight game, the Cats prevailed in the end when Senior Nick Callier scored the game winner with under 3 minutes left to help Cats win back to back titles!  Sophomore Goalie Sam Haupfear stopped 33 of 34 shots and was truly our MVP of the tourney going 4&0 and only allowing one goal per game!

9/26  Tonight, 7:40 p.m. vs Marquette in Championship Game of Marquette Ice Breaker Tourney at Hardee’s Ice Plex in the Valley! Varsity players loved playing in front of biggest crowd ever Friday night and hope another great crowd can come dressed in WHITE to help the Cats win back to back “Ice Breaker” titles! Host team Marquette is sure to have a big crowd to help them try to dethrone our Cats!

9/24  The team beat Eureka on Friday night 2-1 in front of huge “Camo clad” crowd when Sophomore sensation Cole McWard once again scored the game winner with 1:30 left in game to put Cats back in Championship Game Monday 9/26 (“White Out” theme). The victory was a total team effort! Sophomore Goalie Sam Haupfear was a brick wall in goal while Senior Enforcer Zach Nall scored to tie the game but also led the Cats with physical play!

9/23  Tonight at 7:20pm @ Hardee’s Ice Plex vs Eureka in Marquette “Ice Breaker” Tourney Semi-Finals! The varsity Cats are the defending champs of this tourney and have really fed off the big WCA crowds the first two weekends. We would love to see the biggest hockey crowd ever to help them reach Monday’s Championship Game! This would be great way to start the weekend followed by Saturday’s 11 a.m. awesome Sporting WCA Game Day Broadcast and the 1 p.m. Varsity Football Kickoff versus Priory!

9/19  Varsity hockey has now won back to back tourney games with a 3-1 victory over Parkway South on Saturday night to earn a spot in the Semi-Finals this weekend. Cats outshot the Patriots 39-12 but it took some 3rd period heroics by Cole McWard to take the lead for good!  Details regarding big game this weekend coming soon!

9/13  Varsity Hockey performed much better on “Monday Night” than the LA Rams who lost 28-0! The Cats had a full squad and defeated Marquette 3-1 and outshot the Mustangs 44-14! Junior Levi Wright scored the 1st two goals and Senior Nick Callier netted the huge 3rd goal for insurance. Defense was led by Sophomore Joe Schroeder and Sophomore Goaltender Sam Haupfear!

9/12   The team lost 3-1 to rival Summit in front of a huge WCA crowd on Friday night. Despite playing without a quarter of their lineup with many club players out of town, the Cats had plenty of chances to win the game! Sophomore Cole McWard played an awesome game and scored the Cats lone goal! Many young players got their first Varsity action that will help them and the team this season!

2/2  Varsity Hockey Cats “Movin’ On” to Mid States Hockey Quarterfinals vs #1 ranked CBC……..

Congrats to Varsity Hockey team for winning 2 of 3 1st round games over past five days!
Fri – beat #6 ranked Eureka 6-4, Sat – lost to #2 ranked SLUH 4-3, Mon – beat #10 ranked FZE 7-3.

1/25 Varsity Hockey lost 2-1 to Kirkwood on Friday in well played game by both teams!  After a flat 1st period and being down 2-0, WCA outplayed KW in 2nd & 3rd period but came up a goal short.  Solid contributions from everyone including the Schroeder brothers (Jake & Joe), Bradley Jones, Nick Callier and Charlie Zone!  The team ended regular season on winning note Saturday with 5-1 win over Seckman!  Zach Nall & Jason Kelly each had a goal and Willie Canfield had the other 3 for the “Hat Trick”!  Play Maker award went to Levi Wright who assisted on 4 of the 5 goals in his 1st game back in 2 weeks.  PLAYOFFS BEGIN NEXT WEEK!

1/20  Varsity Hockey Regular Season coming to an end this weekend.  Despite a tough stretch of losses, the Varsity Hockey team would like to thank the devoted “Blue Crew” members who came out Monday on their day off to support their fellow Seniors on Senior Night!  The hockey program recognized Jake Schroeder, Gannon McWard and Willie Canfield for their dedication to this team and leading this team through an exciting season with more ups than downs!  Their leadership will definitely show over next few weeks with playoffs beginning! Please come on out a support the team any and every chance you get!

Last 2 Regular Season Games this weekend: Friday vs Kirkwood at Hardee’s Ice Plex at7:20pm!  Then again Saturday vs Seckman at Affton Ice Rink at 7:45pm then playoffs begin next weekend!

1/20  Varsity Hockey lends “Helping Hand to Homeless at St. Patrick’s Center!  Thank you Varsity Hockey team for your service work at the St. Patrick’s Center this past Sunday!  The players, coaches, a few parents & a couple siblings spent 2 hours preparing and serving lunch to over 100 homeless people on a day when the wind chill outside was zero!  Everyone worked hard to make a difference for those in need!  Thank you once again to Patrick & Tina McWard for overseeing Service Projects for the Hockey Program!


1/11  WCA Varsity Monday Night Hockey  TONIGHT at 6:30pm vs #3 ranked DeSmet at Queeny!  This was our biggest win last season with huge crowd so hoping for the same tonight!
WCA Hockey B-team tied FHC 4-4!  Andrew Tipton had huge game netting 3 goals for the “Hat Trick” while Sam Haupfear scored the other!  Varsity lost to Eureka 0-5.

1/5   WCA now has 3 game winning streak after 8-3 win over division rival Lafayette!  Win was total team effort with goals coming from Charlie Zone, Logan Bauer, Jason Kelly, Gannon McWard plus 2 each from Levi Wright and Willie Canfield!  Defense was led by Jake Schroeder & Trevor Neuse!  Trevor also won family bragging rights versus his older brother Justin who is a real good player and Senior team captain for Lafayette 🙂

1/4/16  The Varsity Hockey team brought in 2016 with 2 huge wins over league rival Marquette 5-2 & perennial powerhouse Chaminade 6-2!  – team loved the huge New Year’s Night crowd at Hardee’s led by awesome “Blue Crew”.  Sophomore Levi Wright opened both games with super quick goals (19 seconds into game Friday & 18 seconds into game Saturday) which was huge boost in both games!  Levi also added 4 assists to round out unbelievable weekend! – With the healthy return of two key defenseman (Joe Schroeder & Bradley Jones), Junior Connor Dolan moved back to natural Forward position and scored 2 goals and had 5 assists after being paired up with very talented Canfield Brothers! – Senior Leader Willie Canfield added to his team lead in goals and assists with 3 more goals & 2 assists! – Freshman Jack Canfield refuses to get outworked by any opponent which paid off with 2 more goals plus 2 assists! – Freshman Cole McWard showed off his offensive skills Saturday with a goal and 2 assists vs Chaminade!
WCA B-team also won big game Sat. over Eureka 4-3 with Freshman Trevor Neuse netting 3 goals for hat trick and assisting on game winner then played stellar Defense both nights for Varsity!

12/15  Dr. Stoner and Coach Schoenberg witnessed a classic hockey game that ended in a 2-2 tie between WCA and Lindbergh Flyers.  The Flyers are always a top five team in town and our Cats went toe to toe with them entire game!  After two scoreless periods, Junior Jason Kelly broke the ice with nifty deflection on shot by Sophomore Levi Wright!  After Flyers tied it 1-1, two terrific Freshman helped put Cats back on top 2-1 when Jack Canfield buried a one timer on sweet pass from his good buddie Cole McWard!  Last Game before Christmas is next Monday at 9:20pm vs Vianney at Hardee’s Ice Plex!

Hockey Service update:Special kudos to WCA Varsity Hockey team for “Adopting a Family” through the St. Patrick’s Center and making someone’s Christmas special.  Players and families delivered a truck full of presents last Friday!  Their next team service project will be working at St. Patrick’s Center on Sunday, January 17th!  Thank you to the McWard family for helping facilitate hockey service projects!

12/8  Varsity Hockey team lost 4-2 against Eureka last night!  “Comeback” has been this teams middle name but not this game!  After a slow 1st period and being down 2-0, Cats turned up energy level and cut lead in half to 3-2 after 2nd with goals by Junior Jason Kelly and Sophomore Levi Wright!  Eureka’s goalie prevented the comeback by making amazing saves entire third period and then iced the game with “empty net goal” with :02 left!  Cats dominated final 2 periods out shooting Eureka 19-3!  Next game 12/14 Monday vs Lindbergh!

12/7  On Saturday, the Varsity Hockey team stayed true to form with another comeback win over the always big & tough Oakville Tigers!  Trailing 4-3 entering 3rd period, Junior Charlie Zone was in the right place and tied the game at 4!  Less than a minute later, Junior Nick Callier scored the “game-winner” on a breakaway and total team effort over last 10 minutes to secure the 1 goal victory!  Special kudos to Sophomore Andrew Tipton who helped the Cats with many key shifts for a team who once again shorthanded with only 12 skaters!        WCA Varsity Hockey ends busy 5 game / 11 day stretch TONIGHT, Mon. 12/7,  vs league rival Eureka at Hardee’s Ice Plex at 7:40pm!  Cats have opportunity to finish busy run vs league teams with 4 wins & 1 tie AND need your support to finish on high note!
12/4   Despite missing 6 key players and having only 12 skaters, WCA Varsity hockey team rallied from behind 3 different times and tied a bruising Seckman team 4-4!  Offensive Star of the Game was Senior Gannon McWard who scored 2 goals, the last one coming with a minute left from a silky pass from Junior Jason Kelly! With only 2 regular defenseman in the lineup plus 2 who moved back to help….this group fought to the end to avoid defeat!   NEXT GAME SATURDAY, DEC 5th AT AFFTON ICE RINK AT 6:30pm vs OAKVILLE!  Same 6 players missing so this shorthanded Cats group could use a lot of support from fellow WCA students!

12/1  With 1st place up for grabs a third of the way into the season, your WCA Hockey Wildcats won their showdown with league rival Marquette Mustangs 4-2! Score was tied 2-2 after two periods as Senior Willie Canfield continued his scoring streak with both goals BUT the #1 STAR OF THE GAME was Junior Zach Nall who out hustled Mustangs the whole 3rd period and scored both goals to cement the 4-2 win.  Nall’s “game winning goal” was set up by a sweet pass from Junior Harry Medler!  Next Game Thursday vs Seckman (9p at Affton).

11/30  WCA Hockey won huge game Friday night over the always-tough Lindbergh Flyers 6-3 in front of another loud crowd of Cats fans which really seems to motivate this talented team. As chants rang out for Senior Willie Canfield, he didn’t disappoint them as he scored 4 goals! Great defensive efforts against the strong Flyers were put in by the whole back line of Jake Schroeder, Emma Cockrum, Connor Dolan, Cole McWard & Trevor Neuse!

10/15  Varsity hockey won BIG game over Lutheran South 6-5 to gain quarterfinal berth in Top Hat tourney! Team effort with six different players scoring a goal (Freshmen Cole McWard & Jack Canfield, Sophomore Levi Wright, Juniors Zach Nall & Jason Kelly and Senior Willie Canfield). Freshman Goalie Sam Haupfear made clutch saves to help in the Win!

9/25  The team is off to a fast start winning their first 3 games and earning a semi-final berth in the Marquette Ice Breaker tournament this Saturday at 5:20 PM at the Hardee’s ice plex versus Eureka. The players want to say thanks to all the students who have come out to watch the team and hope another big crowd will be there Saturday!

2/4    Kudos to the Varsity Hockey team on another successful season which ended last night in Game #3 of the Playoffs at the hands of #1 ranked CBC Cadets!  Final score: 1-9. Team highlights for the season : a fifth consecutive division league title, a #8 final ranking out of 37 teams and 3 wins & 2 losses against the toughest division (the Metro Catholic) whom most teams won’t play and those 3 wins came against DeSmet, Chaminade & Vianney.  Special recognition to  – all 4 Seniors (Parker Mitchem, Thomas Meyer, John Moeller and Fisher Wells) for their dedication & leadership to the hockey program all for 4 great years! – our coaching staff (Coach McWard, Coach Canfield and Coach Everett) who volunteer so many hours to help make this team so competitive!  Your sacrifices for the players is great appreciated!  – the WCA students and faculty who showed up so many times to support this exciting team.  Your support and spirit helped tremendously!

1/30    The positive momentum of Spirit Night shifted to the Affton Ice Rink where our biggest & loudest crowd of the season watched a “gutty” Cats Hockey team depleted with injuries take down divisional rival Summit 3-2 in first game of 3 game playoff round robin.  After Sophomore Harry Medler tied the game at one on awesome goal late in 1st period……Senior John Moeller OR “Johnny Hockey” as Cats fan call him scored two huge goals for a lead Cats would never relinquish.  Senior Fisher Wells & Junior Willie Canfield each added two assists apiece in all around team game.  MVP for Cats was goalie Scott Caldwell who made some miraculous saves to help teammates when needed.  Cats “Fan of the Game” was 8th grader Atlin Hall who wore the famous “chicken suit” which might have to appear for next game due to hockey superstitions!  Game #2 of the playoffs is Saturday Night at 8:30pm at St. Peters Rec Plex versus very tough Fort Zumwalt West team!  Thanks again to all the students for your support plus WCA faculty Mr. Zell & Coach Schoenberg.

1/29   Huge night for WCA! Come to WCA Community Night from 6:30 p.m.-8:15 p.m. followed by heading to the WCA Wildcats playoff hockey game at 9:00 Affton Ice Rink (across from Grants Farm off Gravois).  The first game is against our biggest on ice rival, Rockwood Summit, who always has a huge, rowdy crowd.  Hockey players would love their fellow students to all come to the game after Community Night events dressed in your costumes, and have a blast cheering on the Cats.

1/13 The Cats saved their best to honor 4 great Seniors….beating 14 time State Hockey Champ DeSmet for the first time EVER.
With DrStoner and a big crowd of students on hand….the Cats erased a 2 pt  deficit and stormed back with 4 straight goals by Senior John MoellerSophomore Harry MedlerJunior Willie Canfield and Freshman Levi Wright.  Knowing the Spartanswouldn’t quit…..our Defense led by Senior Thomas Meyer held on for 4-3 win!

1/12/15     The WCA Varsity Hockey Team has been playing some exceptional hockey down the stretch and won big divisional game on Saturday versus Eureka 6-2 with a “HAT TRICK” from Senior John Moeller and two big insurance goals late from Junior Willie Canfield!
One of the biggest games of the season is tonight 1/12 at Queeny Ice Rink vs the DeSmet Spartans where WCA will be honoring 4 awesome Seniors who have all played Varsity Hockey all 4 years and helped the Wildcats become entrenched as a top 10 team in the region each season!
All four (4) Seniors are captains and have shown great leadership on & off the ice and will be sorely missed next season!
– Thomas Meyer…..has been a reliable physical defenseman who never backs down from protecting our goal area
– Parker Mitchem….has been a powerful center who can do it all either setting up goals or burying them himself- John Moeller……..nicknamed “Johnny Hockey” for the electricity he brings to the Cats with speed, skill & scoring lots of goals
– Fisher Wells……..has brought the hammer to WCA hockey with physical play in front of net creating space & scoring chances for teammates
Please arrive by 6:15pm at Queeny to salute these 4 great Seniors before squaring off with 3rd ranked Spartans!

12/15  Varsity Hockey Team rallied twice on Saturday night to tie the always tough Oakville Tigers!  Down 2-0 late in 2nd period…..Willie Canfield lit the lamp to jump start the Cats then Connor Dolan tied the game after receiving an awesome backhanded pass from Harry Medler!  After giving up lead early in 3rd period….Senior Captain Parker Mitchem scored a short handed goal with 4 minutes left to secure the tie!  Parkers goal was off the charts and would have made ESPN’s top ten plays of the day had there been some video to send!  Special kudos to the WCA students who came out and represented our team in fun energetic way!  Next Game is tonight (Monday 12/15) at 9:20pm at Hardee’s Ice Rink in Chesterfield versus another top ranked team in the Lindbergh Flyers!  Admission is $5

12/8/14   Westminster Varsity Hockey is back on the Ice tonight at 7:40pm at Hardee’s Ice Plex vs Wildcats from Eureka and needs your support.  In addition to the players going all out on the ice, this team of 20 great players and coaches is also winning off the ice with great charitable efforts!
1. The Hockey Cats recently adopted a beautiful “family in need” for Christmas in conjunction with St. Patricks Center and are busy buying & wrapping presents to make this season a brighter one for this family of girls!
2. The team is also working with a local church who is opening a new “care center” and is in need of baby items!  Cats Hockey team will have a “donation box” at all six of their Varsity games through January 2nd collecting “baby items” so any students, faculty or families that attend any games through 2nd…we would love you to bring any baby items – diapers, wipes, clothes, formula, etc. as well as toddler clothes, new or gently used and put in WCA box at the rink!

11/7/14  After a thrilling 3-2 victory over Vianney in Season Opener…..the Cats Varsity Hockey team hosts defending State Champ CBC Cadets at Queeny Ice Rink Monday  11/10 Night at 8:15p!  Our Varsity Hockey team has high aspirations this season and will get an early preview of what it will take to win it all versus #1 ranked CBC!  Obviously we will need your support so please come out and cheer on WCA Hockey!

11/6/14  The season opener for the Varsity boys’ hockey team against Vianney begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the South County Ice Rink near 270 and Tesson Ferry.  Last year’s team lost to DeSmet in State Quarterfinals, but almost all players are back and much more experienced.  This awesome team is led by their four Senior Captains—John Moeller, Parker Mitchem, Fisher Wells and Thomas Meyer.  The team is re asking for another great season of support from their fellow students.  All games have a $5 admission fee.  Westminster faculty and staff are admitted free of charge with their school ID.

3/13     WCA hockey B team (#2 seed out of 25 teams) has advanced to Championship Game by winning exciting semifinal   game last night 2-0 over Eureka! Sam Haupfear made every save for the shutout with great defense in front of him while Jake Schroeder & Gannon McWard scored 15 seconds apart to seal the victory!     Championship Game is this Friday (3/14) at 10pm at Affton Ice Rink across from Grants Farm! Admission is FREE and this group would love support if you’re home for spring break.

3/12    On  Sat 3/8….B Hockey beat Fort Zumwalt West 7-0 behind 4 goals from Nick Glanvill who also added 2 assists.  Next up on 3/12 at 7:15pm at Fenton is Semi-Finals vs Eureka!       Championship Game is set for Friday at 10pm at Affton if Cats can win on Wed!

2/11    The Varsity Hockey Season ended last night after losing an incredibly tough game to #2 seed DeSmet!  The Cats EFFORT was off the charts and truly “threw the kitchen sink” at the 14-time State Champs!  Coach Canfield was so proud of whole team and thought it was one the best games WCA hockey has ever played!  Special kudos to two Seniors (Zack Bross & Jacob Huelskoetter) for 4 great years on Varsity who arrived when WCA was ranked 35th and are leaving with WCA being an Elite 8 team every year!   Varsity Hockey would love to thank the students once again for another big crowd last night and to Coach Zell & Dr. Stoner coming!

2/10  Westminster & DeSmet go at it again in Game #2 of the State Hockey Quarterfinals tonight at 8:15pm at Queeny.  Zack Bross & Willie Canfield scored to put the Cats up 2 to 1 and held that lead until 7 minutes left in last period and then Cats lost the lead with under 3 left for tough loss in front of the BIGGEST CROWD OF THE YEAR.  Team is hoping that the 150 students who came out Friday will all find one more fellow student to go to tonight’s game and break the 300 mark!  and ONCE AGAIN…..ADMISSION FOR STUDENTS & FACULTY IS FREE.  Special Shout Out to Aaron Layton & Dr. Stoner who were front & center cheering on Cats!

2/7  Varsity hockey team has officially moved on to the State Hockey Playoff Quarterfinals or the Elite 8 with 8 best teams in town.  We had great student support on Monday but need TWICE THE ENERGY TONIGHT!    Game time is at 7:20pm at Hardee’s Ice Plex in the Chesterfield Valley versus #2 seed DeSmet…who always has huge playoff attendance!  Mid-States hockey has challenged all 8 remaining teams to prove who has the best fans and we want to show them!  The first 100 students will receive FREE ADMISSION to the game and it is highly recommended all students break out their “best Hawaiian attire” to warm up the place!  DeSmet has been tweeting last 2 days for students to wear “fiesta theme” so lets show them who can have more fun!

2/4  Varsity Hockey tied #5 seed Lindbergh last night 2-2 in front of biggest student crowd of the year!  They were entertained with fast paced physical hockey and witnessed WCA come back twice with goals by Willie Canfield and Zack Bross.  Joe Woll was awesome between the pipes once again while Thomas Meyer assisted on a goal but was great on Defense the whole game!  With the tie….looks like Cats have above a 90% chance to advance to Quarterfinal round versus DeSmet!  Thx again to students who energized the building!

2/3  In 3-game round robin pool play, Your Cats are 1 & 1!  John Moeller scored game winner late Friday night with one minute left for 3-2 victory over Francis Howell.  Parker Mitchem & Zack Bross each added a goal while Nick Glanvill added 2 assists.  Joe Woll saved the game with huge save after huge save.  Cat’s lost Saturday night to #1 ranked CBC but scored 3 goals, which is more than any team scored versus CBC all year!   Biggest Game of the Year is tonight versus Lindbergh at 7:40pm at Hardee’s Ice Plex in Chesterfield Valley!  The hockey program will pay the $5 admission for all WCA students who wear Blue & White to the game.  Please be on time!

1/28   Out of 37 Mid-States Hockey Teams…..your Varsity Hockey Cat’s earned the #8 ranking overall and will play (3) 1st round playoff games versus #1 seed CBC, #5 seed Lindbergh & #9 seed Francis Howell for the right to move on to Quarterfinals in the Challenge Cup!  This team needs and would love your support and we’ll provide dates & times later in the week.
Hockey B-team is also having lots of success (6 wins, 2 losses and 3 ties) and plays tonight versus Chaminade at 9pm at Queeny!  Admission is Free!  B-team is made up of (2) 7th graders, (10) freshman & (5) sophomores!

1/24 The Varsity Hockey team ended the regular season with an 8-2 win over rival Whitfield and not only honored its 2 seniors, Zack Bross & Jacob Huelskoetter, in style but also clinched it’s 4th consecutive LEAGUE TITLE!  Team was led by Zach Nall & Johnny Moeller who each had two goals apiece plus other tallies by Fisher Wells, Connor Dolan and Zack Bross!  Team also received gritty contributions from Charlie Zone, Jason Kelly & Luke Schroeder!  PLAYOFFS WILL BEGIN NEXT WEEKEND!

1/23 Varsity Hockey Team would love your support tonight to honor it’s two Seniors….Zack Bross & Jacob Huelskoetter!  The game is at 8:15pm at Queeny Ice Rink versus Whitfield and if the Cats win…..they’ll claim their 4th consecutive League Title!

1/19  This Friday with around 25 awesome freshman fans cheering on Varsity hockey team…..the Varsity Cats didn’t disappoint them!  Down 2 zip in 2nd period to John Burroughs, the young Cats didn’t quit and came back for a 2-2 tie!  Freshman Connor Dolan scored both goals from great assists from his freshman linemates Harry Medler & Zach Nall!
then late last night, 1/20…freshman Zach Nall scored his 1st ever Varsity Goal in a 1-1 tie versus league rival Rockwood Summit to put the Varsity Cat’s one league win away from 4th consecutive outright league title!  Please come support the varsity hockey team this Thursday for SENIOR NIGHT vs Whitfield to honor Zack Bross & Jacob Huelskoetter!

1/14 Varsity hockey has now won 2 in a row with 5-2 victory over MICDS!  2 Goals from Junior Johnny Moeller led the way with other goals scored by sophomores Nick Glanvill & Willie Canfield and senior Zach Bross!  Playoffs begin in a few weeks so team would love your support as they head down the stretch beginning with tonight’s 1/17  game vs John Burroughs at 8:45pm at the Webster Ice Rink at 44 & Elm!

1/13 Huge Varsity Hockey Win over Eureka to put Cats in 1st place above Eureka in tight division race!  Cat’s won 6-4 with “Game Winner” from freshman Harry Medler!   Complete team win with huge defensive help from Sophomore Emma Cockrum and Junior Thomas Meyer!

12/14 B team hockey is on a roll and dominated 1st place Eureka team Saturday 4-1 with goals by Tristan Culleton, Nick Glanvill, Gannon McWard, and Connor Dolan (plus more great goaltending by Sam Haupfear).

12/9   Huge game for varsity Cats tonight versus very tough Vianney Griffins!  8:15 p.m. at Queeny Ice Rink off Weidman Road and Manchester (admission $4). Varsity Cats have won 3 of last 4 games and are getting key contributions from many freshman and sophomores with lots of goals from junior and senior leaders!  This should be a great game and players would love your support. Weekend Hockey Wrap Up: C team won 2 big games over Oakville 5-2 and Wentzville Timberland 7-2 and B team won 9-0 over Lafayette.

12/4  The varsity Cat’s won a big divisional game last night versus Eureka 6-1 as sophomore Joe Woll stopped 32 of 33 shots with many huge saves early on to keep game 0-0 after one period!  Then it was “Paco” time as Junior Parker Mitchem scored 2 nasty backhanded shots on the same shift before Senior Zack Bross added 3 goals from his defensive position for his 2nd hat trick in his first two games back from injury.  Looks like some other Cats are striving for Fox Sports Midwest Player of the Week like current winner and teammate John Moeller who scored the other goal in overall solid win!  Freshman Zach Nall and Tristan Culleton were key contributors on defense too!

12/3  Wildcat varsity hockey team has a huge league game tonight at Webster Ice Rink at 8:45 p.m. versus very tough Eureka team!  The older leaders of this team would love your support!  Webster Rink is at SE corner of Highway 44 and Elm and admission is $4! Congrats to John Moeller for being named Fox Sports Midwest High School Hockey Player of the Week for scoring 7 goals and 3 assists in two win’s last week!  John will be recognized on Fox Sports Midwest telecast during the Blues / Islanders game this Thursday so be sure to tune into the game.

11/26  This Saturday, November 30th the varsity hockey team hosts very tough Lindbergh Flyers at the Affton Ice Rink at 9:15 p.m.!  Please bring your family and friends for some end to end action while your Wildcats try to extend their winning streak to 3!  Admission is $4.

11/25   Varsity hockey won two big games over the weekend! A 5-1 win Friday over Lutheran South. Senior Jacob Huelskoetter and junior Fisher Wells scored key goals helping Cats to victory! And…an exciting 8-6 win over Ladue on Saturday. Junior Johnny Moeller scored 4 goals and had 2 assists (6 “total” goals for the weekend).  Sophomore Willie Canfield added 2 goals and 3 assists and sophmore Nick Glanvill added 1 goal and 2 assists.  Freshman Connor Dolan scored his varsity goal ever which was the “game winner” breaking 5-5 tie!   Westminster players would love support from their classmates!  The opponents’ crowds are 10 times the size of ours so our players would love some Westminster energy in the stands.

11/22  It’s cold and damp outside so come indoors Friday and Saturday for GREAT SHOWS both nights! Many hockey families and players saw Thoroughly Modern Millie last night and said it’s a must see for every Westminster student!  Since the play is at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Westminster, choose one then catch the “greatest show on ice” the other night! Varsity “Cats” versus league rival Lutheran South Friday  at 8:40 p.m. at FSI Shark Tank! Varsity games have $4 admission fee. Saturday night varsity Cats skate versus Ladue at 7:45 p.m. at Brentwood Ice Rink! B team Cats also in action 4 p.m. at Queeny Sat versus Oakville!

11/7  Your 1 and 0 varsity hockey team won their “season opener” on Monday night over Marquette 5-2.  Freshman Nick Callier broke the ice with his FIRST EVER VARSITY GOAL and Johnny Moeller added 2 goals to seal the deal.  Goalie sensation Joseph Woll was huge between the pipes and stonewalled the Mustangs in the 3rd period as opponent was gaining momentum!  This team has tons of upper class leadership but is very young with half the team being freshman and sophomores!   The hockey team would love your support at Kirkwood Ice Rink tonight Friday 11/8  at 6:15 p.m. versus the always tough Kirkwood Pioneers!  Address is 111 South Geyer Road in Kirkwood.  Reminder there is a $4 entry fee to all mid-states hockey games!
