Wildcats Win Again As Pfitzinger Nets Five Goals!
Kenzie Pfitzinger netted 5 goals and Christine Ehrmann added a goal and 3 assists as Westminster completely overwhelmed the Orchard Farm Eagles with an 8-0 in the 2nd round of the Ritenour Tournament.
From the opening whistle Westminster was in complete control of this match. The Wildcats were on the attack from the opening touch and took less than 2 minutes to get the 1st goal. At 1:44, Kenzie Pfitzinger slipped a pass between 2 defenders to Lauren Probst who had snuck in behind one of the defenders to receive the pass and 2 touch a shot under the surprised Eagle keeper. The Westminster midfielders were given free reign as Orchard Farm dropped into a defensive shell. With the amount of room they were given, midfielders Ellie Moore, Katie Haverstick, Leah Beck, and Liz Crowell worked the ball effortlessly around the field as they looked for an opportunity to score. At 7:43, Katie carried the ball down the left side and slotted a pass to Kenzie. Ms Pfitzinger feeling a little snake bit lately finally had the cover come off the goal as she took Katie’s pass and fired a low shot from 10yds to put Westminster up 2-0. The Wildcat defense took advantage of the space allowed by the Eagles and pushed into the attacking end. At 10:44, Christine Ehrmann took a drop pass from Liz Crowell and launched a shot from 25 yds that floated over the outstretched keeper for a 3-0 lead. The defense led by senior Tori Vanderheide and aided by Christine, Haley Bettlach, and Christina Dohr did not allow the ball into the Eagle attacking end until well over 15 minutes had elapsed. Even then, Orchard Farm’s time in that end was short lived. At 23:44, Kenzie added another goal when Christine carried in from the left side and sent her a pass which she turned and fired a waist high shot into the right corner to make the score 4-0. Kenzie wasted little time in getting the hat trick when she gathered Christine’s throw in and carried it past the defense for an easy shot and goal at 27:32. While Kenzie was scoring all of the goals, it wasn’t without the efforts of all on the field as they maintained the intensity and control to create the opportunities to score. At 36:14, Kenzie and Christine combined again as Kenzie outworked all 4 defenders in picking up Christine’s deep throw into the box and fired her shot from 10 yds into the net for a 6-0 lead. As time in the half expired Kenzie netted her 5th and last goal of the game. Watson Woodward carried the ball in from the right side and sent a sweet service to Kenzie who once again outworked the defense for the ball and slipped in an easy shot for a Wildcat halftime lead of 7-0.
The 2nd half started with different players on the field but the same level of intensity and pressure. Emily Sherman and Watson took on the attacking responsibilities and put constant pressure on the weary Eagles defense. Aly Tate and Danielle Zee-Cheng came on to continue the outstanding defensive play. Their effectiveness was evident as they did not allow an Eagle shot until 18:16 when an Orchard Farm attacker broke in down the middle and took an off balance shot that glanced off the crossbar. With Westminster in clear control, the Eagles turned to a more physical style. At 25:49, an Orchard Farm player was sent off with a yellow card after she purposely sent Danielle hard to the ground. At 31:26, Katie Haverstick put the final nail in the coffin when she took a pass from Liz Crowell and slipped a shot under the keeper for an 8-0 lead. Keeper Whitney Calvin had little action in the game as she wasn’t forced to make any save until 38:20.
The team effort lands the Wildcats in the championship game of the Ritenour tourney for the 3rd year in a row. The WCA Soccer Stadium will host the championship game on Thursday at 4:30 as the Wildcats take on the Kennedy Celts. The team hopes the Westminster family will stick around after school and cheer them on to the championship!
