Fall 2008 Season
Senior Night with Seven Lady Wildcat Volleyball players
VARSITY WINS FINAL HOME CONTEST OF SEASON
“We knew this day was coming for many years,” Coach Tim Hall announced at the beginning of senior night on October 15th. According to Coach Hall, for the first time at Westminster, the seven seniors were on the volleyball roster. Prior to this year, five seniors were the most the team had ever had.
The seven varsity seniors and their families were honored before the final home match of the season. Coaches Hall and Heather Kea thanked the staff and parent volunteers who have helped make the program a success. Mr. Gene Weber, at seven years, holds the unofficial record for the most consecutive years line judging.
The coaches called each senior and their parents to the floor to recognize their contributions to the team. Additionally, each senior and her family were presented with blue and white balloons and gifts, thoughtfully provided by the team’s sophomore and junior parents. The coaches announced that Kelli Stipanovich with over 1,000 kills has broken the school record for career kills, a record was previously held by Coach Kea. Kelli will be also recognized by the MSHSAA for her career kills. The coaches also announced that Lauren O’Leary has broken the Westminster career assist record with 991 career assists.
After the ceremonies, with boisterous fans cheering them on, the Varsity quickly went to work against St. Elizabeth. Lauren O’Leary was back in action after recuperating from an injury, setting up a series of kills by Kelli Stipanovich to put the Wildcats up 5-0. The back row, including Kali Stewart, Kayla Vande Kamp and Leah Beck, allowed the offense to dominate St. Elizabeth. Aggressive serving, including aces by Kali Stewart and Kaitlyn Pfeifer, kept St. Elizabeth from mounting much of an attack. Kills were also notched by Kelsey Janssen, Kaitlyn Pfeifer, Lauren O’Leary, Katie Weber, and Kelly Penning, which resulted in a final game one score of 25-10.
The second game was even more lopsided, with Wildcat hitters scoring at will. Kelly Penning scored from the right side while Kelli Stipanovich pasted St. Elizabeth from the outside. Lauren O’Leary served over 10 serves in a row, with 6 aces, to make the score 15-2. Excellent passing by Leah Beck allowed the Wildcats to mix up the offense, including a variety of sets for kills by Kaitlyn Pfeifer, Kelsey Janssen and Katie Weber. The Varsity finished game two with a score of 25-5.
The Wildcats face their last opponent of the regular season, away at Orchard Farm, on October 18. The varsity is getting ready for districts, which start October 23rd at Visitation.
